ESCAPE THE PAIN OF VARICOSE VEINS
-by Dr. Dana Dunleavy
WHY ARE VARICOSE VEINS A
CAUSE FOR CONCERN?
Healthy veins contain valves that open
and close to assist the return of blood
to the heart. Veins can become varicose when the valves that control blood
flow are damaged or diseased, causing
blood to pool in the legs. This causes
varicose veins which result in inefficient
blood flow back to the heart.
Varicose veins are often raised above
the skin on legs and can resemble twisted, bulging cords. Left untreated, they
can progress to a more serious form of
venous disease called chronic venous
insufficiency (CVI). Increased pressure
leads to further damage of additional
veins. CVI can cause swelling and achi-ness even without varicose veins.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF
• Heaviness, swelling, fatigue
• Aching, cramping, or leg pain
• Varicose veins or spider veins
• Skin changes or rashes
• Ulcers, open wounds, or sores
WHO IS AT RISK?
Chronic venous insufficiency can affect anyone and gender and age factors may increase your risk - women
older than 50 are more likely to develop
venous disease which can lead to CVI.
Other factors that may increase your
risk include family history, pregnancy, a
standing profession, obesity, sedentary
lifestyle and smoking.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
OF VEIN TREATMENTS?
Those individuals that seek treatment
for their varicose veins find the treatment very worthwhile. Benefits of
• Relief of throbbing legs
• Relief of heaviness
• Ability to walk without struggle
• Assisted healing of venous stasis ulcers
• Confidence to show off legs

suit your individual goals. Windsong’s
comprehensive approach and minimally
invasive techniques, coupled with the
shortest recovery times possible, give
patients the best results with minimal
risk. Patients can choose from Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), a treatment covered by most insurance or the VenaSeal™
Closure System. Although not currently
covered by insurance, Windsong is the
most experienced facility in the region
with the VenaSeal™ Closure System,
a procedure which has advantages that
certain individuals prefer. This new FDA
approved venous closure treatment uses
adhesive to close the diseased vein. CMS
has just announced a code for VenaSeal™, and insurance coverage for these
treatments is expected in January 2018.
Walking is encouraged immediately following both treatments.
