WHY IS BREAST CANCER
SCREENING SO IMPORTANT AND
WHEN SHOULD WOMEN BEGIN
SCREENING FOR BREAST CANCER?
Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of
cancer (excluding skin cancer) and accounts for
more than 40,000 of all cancer-related deaths
in American women (2nd only to lung cancer).
One of every 8 women will be diagnosed with
breast cancer in their lifetime. Since mammography became widespread in the 1980s,
the U.S. breast cancer death rate in women,
unchanged for the previous 50 years, has
dropped 43 percent.
In accordance with the long standing guidelines
adopted by the American College of Radiology,
and the Society for Breast Imaging, Windsong
Radiology Group strongly recommends women
begin ANNUAL screening mammograms at
age 40. Women at higher-than-average risk
for developing breast cancer should consult
their physician as they may need further
consideration for earlier and/or more intensive
HOW DOES BREAST DENSITY
DETERMINE A WOMAN’S RISK FOR
A woman with dense breast tissue may be
at greater risk for developing breast cancer.
Dense breast tissue makes it more difficult for
doctors to spot cancer.
Windsong offers tomosynthesis or 3D mammography to all women because it finds more
cancers across all breast densities, not just
dense breasts. Statistically, approximately 2 to
3 additional invasive cancers (a cancer that has
spread outside of the milk ducts) are found for
every 1,000 women screened.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR
WOMEN OVER 50 TO CONTINUE
WITH ANNUAL BREAST CANCER
Even for women 50 and over skipping a
mammogram every year would miss up to
30% of cancers.
IF WOMEN DO NOT HAVE A
FAMILY HISTORY OF BREAST,
WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW?
Only 13% of women diagnosed with breast
cancer have a family history of breast cancer
making annual breast cancer screening for all
women over the age of 40 critical in the fight
against breast cancer.
WHAT SHOULD A WOMAN LOOK
FOR IN HER BREAST CANCER
SCREENING FACILITY TO ENSURE
SHE IS GETTING THE MOST
Women should seek an ACR accredited imaging
center of excellence for all modalities includ-
ing mammography, ultrasound and breast MRI.
It is also important that the facility have board
certified and fellowship trained radiologists in
Women’s Imaging and board certified breast
sonographers. Patients need to keep in mind
that proper compression is the number one tool
for the detection of early stage breast cancer. At
Windsong our radiologists make a point to de-
liver same day results which significantly reduces
anxiety and improves our patient satisfaction.
Windsong Radiology Group is a full-service
diagnostic imaging practice. It was the first breast
care program in WNY to achieve accreditation
by the National Accreditation Program for Breast
Centers and more recently added mobile mammography to its breast imaging services. As an
Image Wisely® facility, Windsong commits to the
least invasive and most medically appropriate
