Moore khaki color. A hot tip from the
homeowners: “It’s possible to have a
spray paint made of your wall color. We
used Schuele Paint Company and they
made spray paint for us. We sprayed
the vents, speakers, and outlets so they
blend into the walls.” The spray paint is
also handy for simple touch-ups.
To the left of the French doors are
elegant built-in cabinets topped with
glass-fronted doors where the family’s
stemware and china are kept. More storage is at the opposite side of the eating
area, in a cherry buffet topped with
granite. The owners point out a painting of red poppies hanging over this
substantial piece; it was commissioned
from East Aurora-based Alix Martin.
Major changes and updating include
the large show-stopping granite island,
and the removal of a door between the
eating area and the nearby bathroom.
Now a sole door accesses the downstairs bathroom, which is just off a
small hallway. The bathroom has been
updated with granite, cherry, and an artful sculptural glass bowl sink by Kräus.
The island and countertops required
six slabs of granite in light- and dark-flecked Giallo Nuevo color. The original
plan for the island was to have it be 103
inches long and forty-three inches wide,
but four inches had to be trimmed off of
one side because of the weight load and
subsequent bending. Underneath the
island are roomy cabinets in cherry.
Overhead, where there was once a
mix of track and recessed lighting, the
couple did some revamping and lighting
now is mainly recessed with accents
of light via pendants in the pantry and
chandeliers in the kitchen and eating
thirty- and thirty-six-inch. The cooktop
is a Thermador (the couple believes the
brand is the best (“Cheaper than Viking
and just as good”), a six-burner model
with a much-used nearby pot filler.
The kitchen cabinets are KraftMaid,
maple and in the company’s Biscotti
color, a warm and bright tan finish.
The hood above the cooktop is also
KraftMaid, in contrasting cherry. The
kitchen and pantry windows match the
cabinets; the couple painted those, just
one of several finishing projects they
took on themselves.
Other cabinetry includes a storage
area with four pull-out drawers below a
wall-mounted television, a place to stow
electronics and general everyday stuff.
Original plans had a fireplace in this
spot (an insert, not wood-burning) but
the couple realized it would be too close
to the dining table. The storage unit,
next to sliding French doors leading to a
patio just off the kitchen, replaced two
of the original windows.
Complementing the cabinetry,
the walls of the pantry and kitchen
are painted Lenox Tan, a Benjamin
